How to connect to a share on a Mac
To connect to a network share on a Mac, you can follow these steps:
Ensure you have the necessary information: You'll need to know the network path to the share. EG: \\currynet.local\share$\publication$ and your curry credentials.
Finder: Click on the Finder icon in your dock. Alternatively, you can press Command + Space to open Spotlight, then type "Finder" and press Enter.
Access the "Connect to Server" option: In the Finder menu at the top of your screen, click on "Go," and then select "Connect to Server." You can also use the keyboard shortcut Command + K.
-
Enter the server address: In the "Connect to Server" window that appears, you'll see a field to enter the server address. Type in the network address (e.g., smb://192.168.1.100 or smb://hostname) of the computer or server hosting the shared folder.
In order to convert a windows share path into a smb share path reverse the slashes and add smb. EG \\currynet.local\share$\department$ will be smb://currynet.local/share$/department$ etc.
- If you have previously connected to smb://fs5/share it is no longer hosting file shares. In most cases the paths were replaced with smb://fs7. Specifically:
nfs:// or smb://fs5/Alumni$ smb://fs5/faculty-center$ smb://fs5/publication$ became smb://fs7/data/Alumni$ smb://fs7/data/faculty-center$ smb://fs7/data/publication$
smb://fs5/department$ became smb://prod-fs02/department$
smb://fs5/hafermac$ became smb://fs7/hafermac$
Connect to the share: Click the "Connect" button. If prompted, enter your username and password credentials for the network share. Make sure to check the "Remember this password in my keychain" option if you want macOS to remember your login information for future connections.
Select the shared folder: Once connected, you'll see a list of available shared folders on the server or computer. Double-click on the folder you want to access, and it will open like any other folder in Finder.
Disconnect from the share: To disconnect from the network share, simply eject the shared folder by clicking the eject icon next to it in the Finder sidebar.
That's it! You have successfully connected to a network share on your Mac. Remember that the specific steps might vary slightly depending on the version of macOS you are using, but the general process remains similar.
Note: If you have trouble connecting to a DFS share IE (currynet.local/share) you can get a direct path from step 4 above or you can contact the helpdesk.
